SES Young Emerging Leaders (YEL) program

The SES Young Emerging Leaders (YEL) Program is delivered by a partnership between the VICSES VLG and the National SESVA to recognise and develop the next generation of SES leaders.

This opportunity enables two outstanding young SES volunteers from Victoria to participate in national leadership and commemorative events in Canberra from the 5th – 9th of May 2026. 

These places are awarded through a competitive application and selection process overseen by a VICSES VLG panel. 

Who can apply

SES volunteers aged 18 to 30 years (as at 1 March 2026) are encouraged to apply.

Program activities

While the program schedule varies slightly each year, participants can typically expect to:

  • Participate in the AFAC National Memorial Service in Canberra
  • Meet senior national leaders, including the Governor-General and emergency service commissioners
  • Tour key national institutions such as:
    • Parliament House
    • Geoscience Australia
    • National Emergency Management Agency
  • Build lasting professional networks with emerging SES leaders from across Australia

Application requirements

To be considered, applicants must:

  • Be a registered SES volunteer in Victoria
  • Be aged 18–30 years as at 1 March 2026
  • Provide a supporting reference from their SES Unit Controller or UST Operations Manager 
  • Submit a completed application form addressing:
    • Community involvement
    • Leadership experience and contributions
    • Leadership aspirations
    • How they see themselves as a leader in five years’ time
