Frequently asked questions

Empowering Every VICSES Volunteer

Find clear and concise answers to frequently asked questions, designed to support and inform VICSES volunteers effectively.

What is the VLG?

The VICSES Volunteer Leadership Group (VLG) is an incorporated association formed by VICSES volunteers to represent, support, and advocate for the interests of volunteers across Victoria. It is independent from VICSES and government but works constructively with both.

Why was the VLG formed?

Volunteers identified a need for a strong, transparent, and volunteer-led body to give them a voice in decisions that affect their service, support, and sustainability. The VLG was created to meet this need and advocate for long-term reform and proper recognition of the VICSES volunteer workforce.

Is the VLG part of VICSES or the government?

No. The VLG is a volunteer-led and volunteer-run organisation, independent of VICSES management and government. However, it seeks to work in partnership with both to improve outcomes for volunteers and communities.

How can I get involved?

All registered VICSES volunteers are eligible to become members of the VLG. You can participate in elections, join working groups, contribute to policy development, or simply stay informed through our updates. Contact us via the website to learn more or sign up.

What has the VLG achieved so far?

The VLG has led key advocacy efforts including the FundVICSES campaign, contributed to government consultations, developed new policies on volunteer representation, and created a platform for ongoing volunteer-led engagement and reform.

What is the VLG’s position on the Emergency Services Volunteer Fund (ESVF)?

The VLG supports the principle of sustainable funding for VICSES but was not involved in designing the ESVF and does not endorse the levy in its current form. We are actively engaging with government to improve its fairness, particularly for volunteers affected by steep rate increases, such as primary producers.

Where can I learn more about the fund and possible rebates?

For official information on how the levy works, who it applies to, and how VICSES volunteers can apply for a rebate, visit the State Revenue Office’s webpage.
